From 2003 to 2010, Fitzhugh served as assistant to the rector at Christ Church in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he was chaplain to the highly regarded Christ Church Men & Boys Choir program.

In 2001, he was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama by the Rt. Rev. Henry N. Parsley, Jr and served two years as the rector of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Heflin, Alabama. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from The General Theological Seminary in New York. Just prior to going to seminary, he worked with both the Epilepsy Foundation of North Alabama and the Alabama Early Intervention System while living in Birmingham.

Additionally, his mother, Dot Fitzhugh, was a longtime member of Trinity and served on the Altar Guild for many years.
